# Ballintoy Church

Ballintoy Parish Church of Ireland stands above the harbour on Harbour Road, County Antrim, one of the most northerly churches in the Diocese of Connor: a Grade B+ building completed in 1813, open in daylight hours, with a truncated tower after the hurricane of 1894.

## Overview

The church is Northern Ireland listed HB05/10/001 (Grade B+). The present building replaced an older structure and was built under the Revd Robert Trail. The Dictionary of Irish Architects records plans by John Bowden of September 1811, a contract of 28 February 1812 with Henry Clark and the carpenter Henry Wynn (Wynne), and certification of the church on 1 August 1814. A stone below the altar names “Henry Wynne, architect”; Gloine and Brett treat Wynne as supervising architect who probably modified Bowden’s design. The parish describes a two-bay nave, a single north transept, and a tower retained from an earlier building.

A Telford & Telford organ was installed in 1857. An extensive renovation of 1883 added pulpit, pews, flooring, tiling and heating and repaired roof and spire. A hurricane in December 1894 damaged the roof and tore off the steeple, which was not replaced — hence the stubby tower. A sundial dated 1817 is fixed to the west corner. Watson of Youghal designed a chancel window to Trail (d. 1842), who served the parish for 66 years. Listing URLs for Northern Ireland are not used in the Gazette list-entry field.
