# Appleton Wiske Methodist Church

The Wesley Methodist Chapel on Front Street (High Street) in Appleton Wiske, North Yorkshire, is a Grade II chapel of 1821, now in the Thirsk and Northallerton Methodist Circuit.

## Overview

Historic England lists a chapel of 1821 in red brick in Flemish bond with a Welsh slate roof: two storeys and three bays on a stone plinth. Each bay is set in a full-height recessed blind round arch. Four steps rise to a central double four-panel door with a plain fanlight. Round-headed sashes with glazing bars and stone sills fill the arches. A stone tablet to the right at first-floor level is inscribed “WESLEY METHODIST CHAPEL 1821”. Openings have semicircular header arches; the eaves have a cogged brick band.

The National Churches Trust describes a building that occupies almost its entire plot, slightly set back from the pavement. The main hall is two storeys high, lit by sash windows, with narrow north and south galleries with panelled fronts, plus a small kitchen, toilet and an upper meeting room. GENUKI notes that a Primitive Methodist chapel of 1831 in Baker Street and an Independent Congregational chapel in Front Street are now houses. The circuit records a full restoration in 1994.
