# The Annunciation, Bournemouth

The Church of the Annunciation is a Grade II* Roman Catholic church on Charminster Road, Bournemouth, in the Diocese of Portsmouth.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of 1905–06 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, his first executed church, in Geometrical Gothic: red brick with stone bands and dressings, a low nave set against a tall chancel and still taller transepts, and a strongly modelled buttressed bellcote on the west wall of the crossing. Taking Stock notes that the site was given by Miss Ellis and the church paid for by Mrs Lionel Coxon as a memorial to General Augustus Meyrick; G. McWilliam and Sons of Bournemouth were the builders, and the church opened in January 1907 as a chapel of ease to the Sacred Heart.

A Lady Chapel was added and the west end of the nave extended by one bay in 1965, with a loft for organ and choir and a toplit baptistery (Alan Stewart and H. G. Jacobs of Bournemouth). The interior has three-bay arcades framing arched recesses instead of aisles, a three-storey chancel with triforium gallery, and piers banded in pink stone.
