# St John the Evangelist, Angell Town

St John's is a Grade II parish church of 1852-53 on Angell Road, Angell Town, Lambeth, in the Diocese of Southwark.

## Overview

Historic England records a church by Benjamin Ferrey in Perpendicular style, of Kentish ragstone rubble with Bath stone dressings. The plan is a nave with clerestory and a lower chancel; the nave aisles continue as chancel aisles but stop short of the east end. The body of the church has plain parapets. The tall four-stage west tower has a battlemented parapet of stone chequerwork, angle turrets, paired bell-openings and a clock. The plastered interior has a four-bay nave with tall octagonal arcade piers, original pews, a west gallery and an organ in the tower. The chancel east end was later walled off, leaving a short sanctuary. Fragments of heraldic glass survive in the south aisle. A north transept was added in 1876.

The parish site states that Benedict John Angell gave the site to the Church Building Commissioners in 1852, that William Stone of the Casino, Herne Hill, met the cost, and that the contractors were H. and R. Holland, whose tender was 5,302 pounds. Church and vicarage stand on an island site with a green between them, in the Brixton Road Conservation Area.
