All Saints, Wragby

All Saints is a Grade II parish church on Church Street, Wragby, Lincolnshire, in the Diocese of Lincoln, a Commissioners’-style rebuild that replaced a medieval church southeast of the present village.

Overview

Historic England records a parish church of 1839 by W. A. Nicholson, in stock brick with limestone ashlar dressings and slate roofs with stone coped gables and cross finials. The plan is a west tower, nave with south porch and a small chancel. The tower has three-stage angle buttresses, a western lancet with nook shafts, paired lancet bell openings and an ornate corbel table with parapet and four tall corner pinnacles. The nave has pairs of lancets with nook shafts between narrow buttresses.

Lincolnshire Heritage Explorer states that a faculty of 1836 allowed demolition of the earlier church, which stood inconveniently distant, and rebuilding closer to the modern settlement. The medieval site, with twelfth- and thirteenth-century fabric and a fifteenth-century tower, is a scheduled monument; its eighteenth-century brick chancel survived as a cemetery chapel until demolition in the 1980s. Pevsner (Antram) describes the 1839 church as of Commissioners’ type.
