# All Saints and St James the Greater, Silkstone

All Saints on High Street, Silkstone, South Yorkshire — also dedicated to St James the Greater — is a Grade I Perpendicular parish church, the ‘Minster of the Moors’, in the Diocese of Leeds.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of twelfth-century origin, remodelled in the later fifteenth century and completed in 1495, with the chancel rebuilt in 1852–58 and a general nineteenth-century restoration. It is ashlar, Perpendicular in style: a tall two-stage west tower, five-bay nave with lean-to aisles, south porch, and a three-bay chancel with aisle chapels. Aisle walls have flying buttresses in the form of angels, grotesques and beasts. Twelfth-century masonry survives in the chancel arch and north chapel arcade, remnants of a former crossing. Perpendicular screens, 1832–35 box pews, and the Wentworth tomb (Sir Thomas Wentworth, d.1675) are notable. Salvin rebuilt the chancel. Listed Grade I on 18 March 1968 (NHLE 1151740). The parish is Silkstone with Stainborough, in the Benefice of West Barnsley. OS grid SE 29086 05844.
