All Saints, Monkland

All Saints is a Grade II* parish church in Monkland, Herefordshire, rebuilt by G. E. Street in 1866 around a thirteenth-century west tower, in the Diocese of Hereford.

Overview

Historic England records a thirteenth-century church rebuilt by Street in 1866, incorporating twelfth-, thirteenth- and fourteenth-century fragments. The fabric is coursed and random rubble with ashlar dressings under a tiled roof; the spire is shingled. The three-stage west tower is thirteenth-century, with a corbelled cornice and a timber broach spire. The nave south wall mixes reset twelfth-century round-headed windows with tufa dressings and fourteenth-century two-light windows; the south porch is fourteenth-century timber-framing, much restored. The font bowl is probably thirteenth-century.

Sir Henry Williams Baker, vicar from 1851 until his death in 1877 and editor of Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861), paid for the chancel rebuild; parishioners funded the nave. A Walker organ was installed. Baker is buried in the churchyard. The parish website is that of Leominster Priory, which serves the group.
