# All Saints, Laughton en le Morthen

All Saints is a Grade I parish church on Church Corner, Laughton-en-le-Morthen, South Yorkshire, in the Diocese of Sheffield: a landmark steeple above a Saxon north porticus and a twelfth-century chancel.

## Overview

Historic England lists a church with a Saxon north porticus, twelfth-century chancel, and fabric otherwise mostly late fourteenth-century, restored in the mid nineteenth century by Sir George Gilbert Scott. Walls are ashlar limestone partly lined with sandstone, with rubblework to earlier parts and lead roofs. The plan has a west tower with octagonal spire, a three-bay aisled nave with south porch overlapping the tower, a two-bay chancel with north organ chamber, and a north vestry. The tower has a transomed three-light west window, paired two-light belfry openings, and an octagonal embattled parapet with crocketed pinnacles and flying buttresses to a crocketed octagonal spire.

The Saxon porticus against the north of the tower has a segmentally arched doorway within a pilastered Saxon round arch. Wikipedia and CRSBI place the church on a magnesian limestone outlier beside the earthworks of a motte-and-bailey that succeeded Earl Edwin of Mercia’s hall. The church was given to York Minster as a prebend by Queen Matilda and Henry I, probably in 1104–05. Scott’s restoration is dated 1853. The church has level access to the main areas.
