Overview
Historic England records a church of Norman origin, rebuilt in 1273, then heightened and altered in the fifteenth century. The tower, originally over the crossing, was rebuilt at the west end about 1521–35 under Roland Messenger; Henry Keene added the cornice, parapet and pinnacles about 1755. G. E. Street restored the church in 1873–75, and J. Oldrid Scott in 1889. The long interior has slender pillars to the arcades of a lofty nave. The south porch is of about 1275.
Monuments include an architectural wall monument in the north chapel to the 1st Earl of Shelburne, 1754, by Scheemakers; Sophia, Countess of Shelburne, 1771, by Agostino Carlini in the south chapel; and the Shrimpton monument by Westmacott, 1784. Buckinghamshire’s Heritage Portal notes a probable twelfth-century church on the site with chancel, nave, central tower and transepts, aisles and south porch added about 1275, and the central tower taken down in 1509–10.
