# All Saints, Hastings

All Saints is a Grade II* parish church on All Saints Street in Hastings Old Town, East Sussex, one of two churches in the parish of St Clement with All Saints, in the Diocese of Chichester.

## Overview

Historic England records an early fifteenth-century church built on a new site and called “new” in a will of 1436. An earlier church of All Saints had been given to Fécamp Abbey in the early eleventh century, possibly on a different site. Fabric is stone and flint rubble with cut stone dressings, some chequerboard flint and stonework, and tiled roofs. The plan is a nave with north and south aisles, west tower and south porch, and a chancel with north organ chamber and vestry. The three-stage west tower has an embattled chequerboard parapet and a polygonal north-east stair turret. The interior is consistently fifteenth-century, with a tierceron-vaulted tower and four-bay nave arcades on polygonal piers.

An excellent fifteenth-century Doom painting survives over the chancel arch. Other fittings include a fifteenth-century piscina and sedilia, a polygonal fifteenth-century font, and a pictorial east window of 1861 by Gibbs. Galleries were removed when William Butterfield restored the church in 1870. Royal Arms of George II were painted in 1755 by Roger Mortimer. The parish website is that of Hastings Old Town Parish.
