All Saints, Greetwell

All Saints is a Grade II* limestone parish church at Greetwell, two miles east of Lincoln, in the Diocese of Lincoln. A church is recorded in the Domesday entry for the village.

Overview

The listing dates the building to the eleventh century, with early-thirteenth- and late-fourteenth-century alterations, heavily restored in the nineteenth century. The plan is a west tower, nave with south porch, and an apsidal chancel. Walls are coursed limestone rubble under plain tiled roofs. The early-thirteenth-century tower, much restored, has a reset eleventh-century round window with looped decoration on the west face and paired pointed bell-openings. The south nave wall retains the remains of a large blocked eleventh-century keyhole window. The apse has three plain round-headed windows.

A watching brief found that the nineteenth-century apse sits over foundations of a demolished medieval chancel built with the nave. The thirteenth-century tower and font are noted in the village history; the apse holds an early-thirteenth-century rector’s inscription and later Dalyson and Lely memorials. The church is listed as 1064023.
