All Saints, Fulwell

All Saints is a Grade II parish church on Fulwell Road, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, in the Diocese of Durham and the Monkwearmouth Team Ministry.

Overview

Historic England records a parish church of 1847–49 by John Dobson. It is coursed squared sandstone with ashlar plinth coping, quoins and dressings, a Welsh slate roof with stone gable copings, and a stone spire. The plan is a chancel with north vestry, nave with south aisle, south-west spire and south porch, in Early English style. The lower chancel has three stepped east lancets under a continuous dripmould; the square south-west tower rises through short octagonal stages to a short spire.

The interior has a south arcade on round piers, a high chancel arch with dogtooth moulding, a west organ gallery, a hammerbeam nave roof and original pews with shaped ends. Alexander Boddy, vicar from 1886 to 1922, was a founder of the Pentecostal movement in Britain. Stained glass includes possibly original mid-nineteenth-century east windows and high-quality mid-twentieth-century glass in the aisle.
