Overview
The listing and the parish describe a complicated multi-period building. The embattled tower is of three stages: the lower stage said to be twelfth-century, upper stages eighteenth-century, with a faceted copper spire. North and south aisles were added in the later twelfth century; their roofs were raised in the eighteenth century, when brick gallery stages and round-headed windows were inserted. In 1893 Sir Arthur Blomfield demolished the failing north aisle and built a new nave, chancel and north aisle attached to the medieval south fabric. A new west end and baptistry followed in 1913.
The interior has a five-bay arcade of quatrefoil piers. G. F. Bodley designed the rood screen (about 1914) and a triptych reredos (about 1900); Ninian Comper painted the panels in 1931-32, added an aumbry, a wrought-iron chancel grille and, in 1931-38, an organ loft for the Father Willis organ. A 1947 Christ in Majesty by Comper stands above the screen. The parish notes that Rector W. R. Corbould's friendship with Comper from 1919 produced much of the present colour and gilding.
