# All Saints, Maidenhead

All Saints, Boyne Hill, is a Grade I High Victorian church by G. E. Street, completed in 1857 as the first ecclesiastical parish in the Borough of Maidenhead. It stands in Church Close off Boyn Hill Road, in the Diocese of Oxford, at the heart of a Tractarian group of buildings by the same architect.

## Overview

The listing dates the church to 1854-57 by G. E. Street, with the two westernmost nave bays and south-west vestry added by A. E. Street in 1907-11. Fabric is red brick with horizontal bands of blue brick and Bath stone dressings, steep slate roofs and terracotta ridge tiles. An octagonal stone broached spire rises from a banded brick tower. The six-bay nave has slim stone column arcades with Composite capitals and four-centred polychrome arches. Relief-carved Stations of the Cross occupy the nave spandrels; Hardman glass fills the east and west windows.

Pevsner called Boyne Hill Street at his best, a powerful group of church, gate, parsonage, school and schoolmaster's house. John Betjeman referred to it as the Tractarian Cathedral. Bishop Samuel Wilberforce consecrated the church on 2 December 1857; the tower and spire were dedicated in 1865. Street designed gravestones in the churchyard for his wife and her father. The former school is now the parish centre.
