# St Bartholomew, Richards Castle

St Bartholomew’s is a redundant Grade I church beside Richard’s Castle on the Herefordshire–Shropshire border, now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

## Overview

The nave and chancel are twelfth-century; a south aisle and north chapel were added in the early fourteenth century and a south porch in the fifteenth. A late nineteenth-century restoration followed. The church is of random rubble with ashlar dressings and tiled roofs. A separately listed Grade I detached tower of the fourteenth century stands about ten metres to the east, a square three-stage belfry with a shallow pyramidal slate roof. The parish sits on the Welsh Marches, close to the earthworks of the Norman castle that named the village. After redundancy the Churches Conservation Trust conserved the building; worship continues at All Saints, Batchcott, in the same historic parish, Diocese of Hereford.
