# St Michael & All Angels, Addingham

St Michael and All Angels stands about half a mile south-west of Glassonby, Cumbria, the Grade II* parish church of the ancient parish of Addingham in the Diocese of Carlisle.

## Overview

The medieval village of Addingham was washed away when the River Eden changed course around 1350; the earlier church site now lies under the river. The present building, probably early sixteenth century with reused masonry, is of large coursed red sandstone blocks with a green slate roof, a three-bay nave, two-bay chancel, and a west twin bellcote. Alterations date from 1786 and 1898. The porch holds a hogback stone, a ninth-century decorated cross-shaft in two pieces, and an incised grave slab, all recovered from the river. Heaton, Butler and Bayne glass of 1900 lights the interior. A scheduled churchyard cross stands outside.
