# Aberdeen Methodist Church

Aberdeen Methodist Church on Crown Terrace is a granite chapel of 1873 by James Souttar, the third home of a Methodist society in the city that dates from 1759.

## Overview

Dr Memyss of Aberdeen asked John Wesley to send a preacher in the late 1750s. Christopher Hopper arrived in 1759; Wesley himself first visited in 1761, the first of fourteen visits. The society worshipped in Queen Street from 1764 to 1818 and later at Long Acre before moving to Crown Terrace.

Aberdeen City building-warrant drawings name James Souttar as architect for the Wesleyan church on Crown Terrace, approved in December 1872. The chapel opened in 1873. Historic Environment Scotland’s National Record notes the 1873 date; the building is not a statutory listed building (unlike the nearby Crown Terrace Baptist Church).

The sanctuary was remodelled in 2003, when pews and the pipe organ were removed. Methodism in Aberdeen marked its 250th anniversary in 2009.
