Overview
In the late 19th century, Prenton was a rural township southwest of Birkenhead. Prosperity from River Mersey trade led to its development, starting with the hilltop overlooking Birkenhead. This area, with its large houses and gardens, remains desirable, with some homes converted to communal uses like nursing homes.
In 1887, a community church was established in the Prenton Bowling Club premises, later becoming Prenton United Reformed Church (URC). Its permanent site at Storeton Road and Prenton Road West was chosen due to its strategic location, forming the terminus of an electric tram route in 1901. Prenton became part of Birkenhead in 1928.
Throughout the 20th century, the area around Prenton URC saw significant development, including the Mount estate and a thriving shopping center on Woodchurch Road. Nearby, Tranmere Rovers Football Club’s Prenton Park attracts many fans.
Prenton URC combines Congregational and Presbyterian members, celebrating Holy Communion monthly and during Easter and Christmas. The church first met in 1887, celebrating its centenary in 1987 with a commemorative book, available in Adobe Reader format.
